When I got home from Queniborough I found that Pevsner says St Mary has "A superb spire. One of the finest in the county" and that "A fine broad village street leads towards the church." But that understates things. Queniborough, though it borders industrial Leicester suburbs, is ridiculously picturesque - the sort of village that attracts chocolate box sellers or the manufactures of jigsaws. The best description of what you will find there comes in Charnwood Borough Council's conservation area character appraisal. But the village noticeboard gives a good indication of the pressures facing rural England today. It talks of ...
The following graph shows all the leaders of the Labour Party who have been in post when the party has been in opposition at the time of at least one round of annual council elections.
Fifty years ago this week, the Left Bank in Paris was rocked by student protests, later followed by workers' strikes. Revolution was in the air. I can't claim to have been there then, though I watched as much as was available on British TV news. I was studying French 'A' level at the time, my [...]
Second paragraph of third chapter: This Euro-American war was certainly not the war which is being waged while I write this book, in spite of obvious similarities. At this time the Germans had recovered from that extravagant hooliganism which had turned the world against them in an earlier period. They had in a manner reverted from Nazism to the more respectable Prussianism. Other facts also show that this was not our present war. Both India and South Africa had left the British Empire and were already well-established independent states. Moreover, weapons were now of a much more lethal kind, and ...

I was not up for election this year but my ward colleague in Whickham South and Sunniside, Marilynn Ord, had a superb result. Marilynn scored 1970 votes, the highest for any candidate in Gateshead. She had a majority of 1314, which in itself was bigger than 12 of the 19 winning Labour candidates' actual votes. With two-thirds of the votes cast in the ward, Marilynn has a result of which she can

Yesterday Whickham Volunteer Library held a 2nd hand book sale. The books had been donated by members of the public (I have a large number to pass on). Alas, there were already lots of helpers there when I arrived so I was given the job of getting people to fill in survey forms about the library.
As health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, stood up in the House of Commons to make a statement apologising for what he termed a "computer algorithm failure dating back to 2009", as a result of which an estimated 450,000 women between the ages of 68 and 71 had not been invited to their final screening for breast cancer, my first thought was that computers don't make errors of this nature. This is not to pigeon-hole me as a new technology geek who believes in a fully-automated future. I refuse to use internet banking for example, as I don't trust it. In my ...
I like this, and not just because at the start it is trying hard to turn into Traffic's Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. Doves had a lot of hit singles (as the teenagers call them) at the start of the century, but this dates from 2009 when the hits had dried up. According to Wikipedia: In a track-by-track discussion with NME, Doves said that the song is about Winter Hill near Bolton. And the stunt cyclist in the video is Danny MacAskill from Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye.
This year I decided to carry out an experiment. I had the feeling that our strategy of Targeting had swung too far one way and was over-allocating resources, adding to the haemorrhaging of our Core Vote and leading our supporters, ex supporters and electorate at large to view the LibDems as increasingly becoming irrelevant. So I decided to do some work in the non-Target ward in Ealing that I had been allocated without using any human or material party resources. I also did not work with the other "paper candidates" in the Ward as I did not want to detract ...
My video diary from Friday - off to the count in the morning. Two wards were of particular interest to me - Ryton and Dunston Hill and Whickham East. On the way to the count I was concerned about Ryton but was confident we would gain Dunston Hill. Pelaw and Heworth was always going to be an outside chance but I was pleased that we were only 102 votes behind. Low Fell was a top target for Labour
Commenting on Donald Trump's speech in which he suggested knife crime in Britain was increased by British firearms laws, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Ed Davey said:"London has seen a disturbing rise in knife and gun crime but Donald Trump's remarks are nevertheless ridiculous. "To defend America's shocking gun laws by revealing his ignorance of Britain should alarm even his apologists in the Conservative Party. "Theresa May should confirm to Parliament that she will explain to Trump that the UK's strict gun laws have been key to keeping gun crime much lower than in America, and that the recent rises ...
Slightly late but this is my video diary for polling day. It started in Ryton, moved on to Ryton and finished in Sunniside where, at the last moment, I was reminded I needed to vote!
Our most recent edition of eFocus for Whickham was published on Wednesday. Due to the election battle, I didn't have time to post it to the blog so here it is on this link.
Amongst our many gains in Richmond in the early hours of Friday morning was a very familiar face, pointed out by Michael Mullaney on Twitter: Congratulations to former East Midlands Lib Dem MEP Bill Newton Dunn on gaining a safe Tory seat in South Richmond yesterday. Good to see him back in elected office — Michael Mullaney (@miketmullaney) May 5, 2018 And here's the proof: I was delighted when Bill joined the Liberal Democrats – which always seemed a better fit for his boldly pro European ideals than the Conservative Party. He served the East Midlands very well for 15 ...

I mentioned two huge and deep pot-holes in this popular local scenic lay-by not so long ago. My previous posting refers – see link to it below:- Well my report to Lancashire County Council brought a swift response I'm pleased to say and the biggest of the deep ruts have now been filled with tarmac. It's still not the most even of lay-by surfaces and could really do with a complete resurfacing but in these times of austerity it's a welcome and quick bit of work from LCC.
You can usually spot a Carnegie Library from way off as they are always architecturally very pleasing on the eye. I know of one locally in Crosby at College Road which sadly was closed by Sefton Council not so long ago but have recently come across another one in Walton. The former Walton and Fazakerley Branch Library has also been closed (by Liverpool City Council) but it has been repurposed by the NHS as one of two bases locally for their Life Rooms facility. The refurb is reasonably tasteful although the windows are too modern in their construction for my ...
