ITV reports of another high-profile recruit for the Liberal Democrats, fuelled by Brexit: The former Loughborough and Charnwood MP Stephen Dorrell has joined the Liberal Democrats, urging other liberals in the Conservative Party and social democrats in Labour to now "break cover". He was a Conservative MP for 36 years and served as a minister in the Margaret Thatcher and John Major governments. In 2019 Dorrell left the Conservative Party and joined Change UK, where he stood in the European Parliament election for the West Midlands constituency, but failed to get elected. Meanwhile, in other news of British politics being ...

I tried, you know? But that's not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, [...]

It's all happening behind the Sunday Times paywall tonight: A leading Tory Brexit rebel has struck a secret deal with the Liberal Democrats in what is the first significant move towards the formation of a "remain alliance" at the general election. The Liberal Democrats have agreed to stand aside to help former Conservative Dominic Grieve save his Beaconsfield seat, paving the way for a Brexit showdown at the ballot box.The article says our adopted candiate, Rob Castell, has agreed to stand down "following talks with party bosses". We polled just 4000 votes in in Beaconsfield at the last two general ...

Stephen Dorrell was Health Secretary in John Major's government and as recently as 2014 was Chair of the Commons Health Select Committee. Tonight, in an article for The Times (£), he announced that he had joined the Liberal Democrats. However, we belittle the distinct political traditions of Liberal Democrats, social democrats and liberal Conservatives if we pretend that voices in the "centre" are all the same. The argument for realignment is different. Democratic politics requires its practitioners to build coalitions of people whose views are not identical, but who share political objectives and a commitment to see them translated into ...

Stephen Dorrell, who was health secretary in John Major's government and a Change UK candidate in this years's European elections, writes behind the Sunday Times paywall: The slow-motion disintegration of the Conservative and Labour parties is the key political fact of 2019. Brexit is the immediate detonator, but the underlying causes run deeper and create the opportunity to reshape politics. He goes on to say that this reshapaing requires liberal Conservatives and social democrats to break cover from their respective parties and join the Liberal Democrats in a big liberal tent. It isn't just a question of "joining the Liberal Democrats"; ...

A win for one of the big boys, as the Guardian walks away with our Headline of the Day Award. The judges were reminded of the time that Andrew Newton, told to seek out Norman Scott in Barnstaple, looked for him in Dunstable instead.

Second paragraph of third chapter:A few miles south of Aksum we climbed a long, rocky ridge, dotted with round, green bushes, and on the crest I was glad that I had walked ahead and could enjoy this moment alone. Below me —like a vast bowl brimming with beauty — lay a broad, sunny valley, lined with golden grasses, and from its floor rose a low hill, crowned by a tree-surrounded church, and faintly, across the silence, came the solemn chanting of many priests — a sound so sweet in its remoteness that it seemed to belong to the soul of ...

Boris Johnson must be used to the wheels coming off his schemes by now. Since becoming Prime Minister he has failed to win a single vote in the House of Commons, had his prorogation of Parliament overturned, after judges concluded that he had misled the Queen (an offence which in another era might have seen him lose his head), and put forward a rehashed withdrawal deal to the EU, which looks like it will be rejected once again. Still, he has his good relations with Donald Trump to fall back on, and the promised trade deal. But that deal too, ...

There's an interesting job advert coming up today if you fancy being the person who is the link between Jo and the party. You need to get in quick, though – closing date is a week on Tuesday. I like the emphasis on two way communication in the job description: To advise the Leader on all issues relating to the internal workings of the Liberal Democrat Party, and work to ensure the Leader has a strong relationship with the wider party. Regular interaction with state and EU Liberal Democrat parliamentary groups and their staff to ensure a two-way flow information ...
